8/22/2023 0 Comments Kids fit bits![]() Lets come together to raise children with a healthy relationship with food. Communication and cooking meals together at home is more essential than ever to cut through all the noise and create healthy eating patterns. With the bombardment of information and internet access these days pressure to fit in and be a certain way is bigger than ever. So, please, do be conscious of what patterns and habits you are leading your child into. Even if you feel a fitbit is a potentially good toy for your child, I would suggest a conscious conversation at home around what it is to be fit and healthy, just like my good friend did. I feel that it’s a subject that needs to be raised and everyone should be aware of. The psychology of eating is a real and valid subject that can’t be ignored, and is very effective in assisting people that do suffer from eating disorders. Where are the girls who want to be engineers, writers, or the next prime minister?! Don’t even get me started on #fitspo, or the fact that every second girl I come across has aspirations to be a model. But as a real food advocate, plus my knowledge of the current ‘eating disorder’ epidemic (whether that be over or under eating, or even ‘orthorexia’- the obsession with restricting to eating only super foods for fear of ill health) I feel there is a higher likely hood of children being influenced in an unhealthy direction. This is not setting kids up with a healthy awareness of how to eat real food, with regular eating patterns, again, it could potentially be a slippery slope to a lifetime of dieting. Now of course this is not a hard and fast fact of what is going to happen. Now my issue is feeding the shake system to children. They just have to take the companies word for it. Quite often these home sale systems only give you basic information and the seller doesn’t even know how to read labels to they have no idea what is in them. ![]() The second incident is seeing people who sell ‘shake systems’ for nutrition who usually know nothing about nutrition themselves feeding these, ‘great nutritional systems’ to their small children. ![]() Quite often the mental aspect is very hidden until you have a well-established idea and pattern to deal with. It’s a slippery slope from monitoring fitness to controlling food, to eating disorders. Wait, what? 10 year olds are getting fitbits? First of all what does a 10 year old need to monitor their health, secondly, in the hands of the wrong child (quite possibly mostly girls) with the wrong self esteem and body image, I can see disaster ahead. After a discussion with her about this, it is obvious that this will be a toy that will be redundant within a week or so, he only wanted it because his classmates were getting them. The first incident was with a friend of mine who’s 10 year old asked for a fitbit for his 10th birthday. In the past few weeks a few things have come to my attention over the past month or so and they greatly concern me.
